While you may not talk about it much, or hear about it, vaginal prolapse could happen to any woman, though most often it happens to women who have had a vaginal birth or have gone through menopause. It happens when the muscles supporting the pelvic organs weaken, which causes the uterus, bladder, or urethra to droop. A vaginal prolapse could be one of several different types, but they all could benefit from vaginal prolapse surgery from the team at Body Proud AKS and Dr. Sassoon. Woman from Brooklyn, Greenwich, Manhasset, Manhattan, Ridgefield, and the surrounding areas have benefited from having vaginal prolapse surgery to enhance their quality of life and help to avoid painful sex, discomfort urinating, damage to nearby organs, and other potential issues. Signs and Symptoms of Vaginal Prolapse
Most women don’t know they have a prolapse. Although there are usually no symptoms, the signs vary depending on which organ is prolapsed. The following is a list of the more common symptoms that women may feel:
- Pressure or heaviness in the pelvic area
- A “sitting on a ball” sensation
- Presence of a lump at the vaginal opening
- Feeling full in the vagina
- Lower back pain, which typically alleviates when lying down
- Incontinence
- Incomplete bowel movement
- Increased frequency in infections
- Urine leaks when sneezing, coughing, exercising, laughing or having sex
- Painful or uncomfortable sex
Different Types of Vaginal Prolapse
There are actually four different types of vaginal prolapse, and the procedure to correct them are also different for each one. Anterior vaginal prolapse, cystocele, happens when the bladder droops into the vagina. Posterior vaginal prolapse, rectocele, happens when the wall between the rectum and the vagina deteriorates. This results in the rectum bulging into the vagina/genitals. An apical prolapse is when the upper part of the vagina droops down into the lower part. And finally, a uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus falls into the female genitalia.
